Consequently, we will be prioritizing candidates who can start in this location by set date as expected. We’re keeping the situation under review and would adjust our position should the restrictive measures be removed later on.
Minimum qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or similar or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience in design, analysis/development of thermal solutions (servers, storage. switches, etc.).
  • CFD software (FloTherm/Icepak or equivalent)
  • Fundamental/advanced technology experience: heat pipes, vapor chambers, heatsinks, thermal interface materials, fans, liquid cooling, heat exchangers.

Preferred qualifications:
  • MS/PhD Mechanical Engineering.
  • 8 years of experience in design, analysis, and development of thermal solutions of data center related equipment.
  • Experience in full product life cycle from design through qualification through deployment, developing specification, and managing suppliers to deliver high quality products
  • Thermal measurements experience including the use of thermocouples, thermal test vehicles, wind tunnels, velocity probes, heat balance assessments.
  • Components level and system level analyses, experimentation, and design principles, thermal control experience

About The Job

As a member of a fast-paced multi-disciplinary team, you use your creativity and diverse range of engineering experience to explore solutions to a variety of engineering problems. As a mechanical engineer, you participate in the design, analysis, and prototyping of new concepts. You work in a manufacturing and product oriented development environment and collaborate with vendors and outside sources in order to see parts through to manufacture.

Our computational challenges are so big and unique we can’t just buy our hardware, we’ve got to make it ourselves. Our Google Cloud Development team designs and builds the hardware, software and networking technologies that power all of Google’s services. As a Thermal/Mechanical/Systems Engineer you design and evaluate our systems (server) platforms and data center systems, identifying product requirements and contributing to research and project planning. From the chip to chiller, you are responsible for designing and optimizing an architecture that will scale with Google’s continued growth and innovation. With your technical expertise, you conceive, lead and manage projects, develop product and process improvements, provide consultation to others and help facilitate training and development. You will develop and deliver excellent (thermal) systems, products, and advanced technologies with a focus on end-to-end, chip-to-chiller, infrastructure stack optimization and innovation opportunities, in collaboration with cross-functional partners.

Behind everything our users see online is the architecture built by the Technical Infrastructure team to keep it running. From developing and maintaining our data centers to building the next generation of Google platforms, we make Google’s product portfolio possible. We’re proud to be our engineers’ engineers and love voiding warranties by taking things apart so we can rebuild them. We keep our networks up and running, ensuring our users have the best and fastest experience possible.

Responsibilities

  • Participate and lead in development efforts in thermal solutions, engage and closely collaborate with JDMs and suppliers to deliver high quality products, collaborate, supervise, mentor, and motivate suppliers to design and develop excellent products.
  • Architect and influence product design by providing thermal/mechanical engineering insight into the technology roadmap, identify and scope innovation opportunities and technology risks, contribute to overall system architecture and optimize Total Cost of Ownership, work with cross functional teams.
  • Take responsibility for thermal/mechanical design, including requirements gathering, concepts generation and detailed design, analysis and verification testing, cross-functional reviews, and manufacturing release.
  • Design and specification of thermal management hardware including material selection, heat sinks, heat exchangers, air movers, pumps, and all supporting equipment, work with internal manufacturing teams and external fabrication vendors during the product development cycle
