Corning is one of the world’s leading innovators in materials science. For more than 160 years, Corning has applied its unparalleled expertise in specialty glass, ceramics, and optical physics to develop products that have created new industries and transformed people’s lives.

Corning succeeds through sustained investment in R&D, a unique combination of material and process innovation, and close collaboration with customers to solve tough technology challenges.

Corning’s Display Technologies segment manufactures glass substrates for active matrix liquid crystal displays (“LCDs”) that are used primarily in LCD televisions, notebook computers and flat panel desktop monitors.

Responsibilities
  • Work with project team members to solve difficult mechanical engineering and process equipment related problems, resolve project related issues, and develop understanding of process and equipment design requirements
  • Craft machine design specifications, budgets and mechanical design concepts.
  • Design and follow construction of prototype and production process equipment, conduct proof of concept and prototype tests to validate design concept, collect and evaluate data, and make appropriate engineering recommendations
  • Focus on the design, system integration/debug, installation, and production start-up of process machines, machine components and material handling systems, and training of plant personnel.
  • Responsible for acquiring knowledge of assigned areas (tolerance analysis, component specification, process requirements, machine functionality, material selection, budgets, etc.)
  • Work with external machine builders, system integrators, and suppliers to successfully deliver assigned areas of responsibility to overall project team on-time, on-budget, and to meet process performance measures
  • Support the generation of construction drawings (using 2D/3D software packages), installation drawings, and ensures that final drawing packages reflect as-built conditions and satisfies Corning drawing standards
  • Report on project activities, status, and issues on a periodic basis to project & department leadership
  • Work in a team-based environment and able to participate on a highly matrixed project team to execute project assignments, with minimal supervision
  • Manage new equipment design projects to ensure timely drawing completion, material sourcing, fabrication, testing, shipment, and installation/commissioning
  • Comprehend and apply sound engineering principles in the design of thermally functioning process equipment.
  • Apply engineering principles primarily in the fields of mechanical design, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics. Use of numerical and physical modeling
  • Collaborate with scientists and process experts as part of the engineering process.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing operations to further define and receive new and modified process equipment.
  • Observe and define incremental process equipment improvements.
  • Lead design teams, conduct manufacturing experiments, evaluate vendors, etc.
  • Supervise equipment installation and on-site commissioning as required.
Education & Experience:
  • B.S. / M.S. Mechanical Engineering or related
  • 5 - 7 years in a technical field to include:
  • Mechanical Design of products and/or machines
  • Vendor interaction for the fabrication of parts, assemblies, or large integrated systems .
  • Project or Engineering Management o Technology or Product Transfer to manufacturing or other organizations
Required Skills:
  • Proven skills in 2-D and 3-D CAD, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, and knowledge of ANSI Y14.5-1994 drafting standard
  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling (Solid Works preferred), and use of simulation modules to optimize designs and/or demonstrate feasibility (finite element, computational fluid dynamics etc.)
  • Self-starter who is results- oriented, possesses a high dedication level, and can meet objectives and timelines while applying sound problem solving and decision-making processes and skills
  • Knowledge of mechanical design, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics.
  • Strong desire and commitment to learn Corning’s thermal processes.
  • Results oriented; delivery of tasks to project schedules.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work in a global environment.
  • Experience in successful development and delivery of new products or fully integrated, first/next generation process machine systems through early stages of innovation and into manufacturing.
