Job Description

The NMD (Neuromuscular Diseases) Medical Science Manager (MSM) is the key Medical person acting as the main point of contact to external stakeholders (including but not limited to HCPs/Key Scientific Experts/patient advocacy groups/payers/etc.). At this junction, the MSM will assure accurate clear and valued information regarding our science to multiple levels within the medical community and communicate complex cutting edge scientific information and research concepts to healthcare decision makers. In addition, the MSM will facilitate the implementation of medical initiatives such as medical education events, data generation, or clinical trial requests, patient support programs, and EAP within the country. The role may also include sharing insights from the field and use these insights to contribute to company/brand strategy, educate key HCPs on our medicines where appropriate and organize the scientific content for medical education, and provide internal training/education.

The NMD MSM is expected to require 3-4 days in the field per standard week to carry out his/her duties.

Key Accountabilities
  • Field Engagement:
  • Establishes long term scientific/strategic relationships with leading specialists (physicians, physical therapists, allied health), and with related medical societies and academic centers of excellence.
  • Communicate complex cutting edge scientific information and research concepts to healthcare decision makers and advance the scientific knowledge among the medical community.
  • Develops affiliate Key Medical Experts (KME) strategy and engagement plan
  • Helps to gather and leverage medical/scientific insights through attendance at NMD scientific meetings to further develop own knowledge base in line with company and medical strategy
  • Implements insight generation activities which will include not only the KSEs but also other HCPs, nurses, Patient Advocacy Groups and other stakeholders who are involved in the care of NMD patients in the country
  • Medical Supports and Training
  • Support therapeutic experts/ Key Medical Experts (KME) in developing concepts and protocols for SRAs / IITs / registries
  • Represents Biogen locally to reactively support any expanded access requests including, on occasion, determining specific information needed to allow a patient into the program or not
  • Proactively provides insights to the Global EAP team regarding any best and/or not-so-good practices that can be utilized by other sites globally
  • Supports maintenance of a globally-aligned and locally-specific patient support program that will address the needs of the patients and their families in their journey to receiving and maintaining therapy from their HCP
  • Actively shares new information and unmet medical needs gathered in HCP interactions with internal stakeholders where appropriate
  • Provides global/ franchise approach for medical support on regulatory strategies for registration/ reimbursement of new products or line extensions
  • Collaborate with Global Clinical Operations (GCO) with respect to clinical trial execution eg site identification, Site Initiation visits
  • Educational/Other Scientific Activities
  • For non-product-specific medical education event
  • Assembles a steering committee to decide on topics and speakers
  • Invites and briefs the speakers, providing them with appropriate supporting resources if requested
  • Facilitates discussion between multiple speakers who will be delivering a session together
  • Ensures compliance of materials to Biogen and local regulations
  • Attends the education event to deal with any last minute issues that may arise
  • Other scientific activities
  • Works with the cross functional team to identify educational gaps that can be addressed via a local publication or a data generation activity
Qualifications
  • Master degree; Advanced terminal degree preferred (MD, PhD, PharmD) or equivalent combination of experience and education;
  • >3 years of experience as medical science liaison or medical science manager
  • At least bi-lingual (English + local language business fluency)
  • Strong communication skills; Strong team player
  • Customer focused both internal and external
  • Strong Interpersonal skills
