Minimum qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Textiles, Fiber Science, similar Engineering field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 3 years of industrial experience with textile engineering, yarn development, leather manufacturing, and soft goods integration
  • Experience working with leather tanneries/sustainable leather manufacturers
  • Experience with textile, including synthetics and natural fibers, manufacturing/assembling processes (knitting, weaving, die cutting, and bonding)

Preferred qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Textiles, Fiber Science, or a similar Engineering field
  • 5 years of experience in textile/leather development in consumer devices
  • Experience designing tests and performing experiments to develop new materials, and working with vendors and integration in Asia
  • Ability to travel internationally up to 20% of the time
  • Knowledge of material analysis and failure analysis techniques
  • Passion for materials engineering and excellent organization and project management skills

About The Job

As a member of a fast-paced multi-disciplinary team, you use your creativity and diverse range of engineering experience to explore solutions to a variety of engineering problems. As a mechanical engineer, you participate in the design, analysis, and prototyping of new concepts. You work in a manufacturing and product oriented development environment and collaborate with vendors and outside sources in order to see parts through to manufacture.

As a critical member of a global, multidisciplinary team that interfaces with Industrial Design, Product Design, Product Integrity, Operations, and our manufacturing partners, you will play an impactful role in researching and developing textile materials to deliver breakthrough experiences for our products. By leading the textile design and color development, you will help create products that are highly functional and aesthetically pleasing for our customers

Responsibilities

  • Work with Industrial Designers, Color Material Finishing Designers, and Product Designers on materials inspiration and textile/leather selection for products to achieve functional, cosmetic, and performance goals.
  • Research next-generation yarn materials and help engineer exciting constructions that are a core to Google’s textile design language.
  • Manage root-cause integration-related issues caused by textiles and help resolve them in a timely manner with integrators to trial integration concepts.
  • Support review colors, textiles, and integrations at both raw material and integrated levels to ensure design intent has been achieved.
  • Work with yarn suppliers to enable future roadmap (e.g., sustainable textiles, balance property tradeoffs, and drive technical paths to scalable solution). Use knowledge of leather and leather processing.
