General Summary

Develops, implements and improves processes, methods, time standards, capacity plans, operation sequence, equipment, tools, and production line layouts in the manufacture of parts and assemblies. Collaborates with design engineering to improve product designs for manufacturing. Creates and maintains documentation and reporting systems for manufacturing activities.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physical Sciences, or related field and 5+ years of Manufacturing Engineering or related work experience.

OR

Master’s degree in Engineering, Physical Sciences, or related field and 4+ years of Manufacturing Engineering or related work experience.

OR

PhD in Engineering, Physical Sciences, or related field and 3+ years of Manufacturing Engineering or related work experience.

Physical Requirements
  • Frequently transports between offices, buildings, and campuses up to ½ mile.
  • Frequently transports and installs equipment up to 10 lbs.
  • Performs required tasks at various heights (e.g., standing or sitting)
  • Monitors and utilizes computers and test equipment for more than 6 hours a day.
  • Continuous communication which includes the comprehension of information with colleagues, customers, and vendors both in person and remotely.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 8+ years of Manufacturing Engineering or related work experience.
  • 1+ years of work experience in a role requiring interaction with senior leadership (e.g., Director level and above).
  • 1+ years in a technical leadership role with or without direct reports. (only applies to positions with direct reports)

Principal Duties And Responsibilities
  • Provides Design for Manufacturing (DFM) input to product design teams during engineering development to meet product cost, quality, and reliability requirements; applies knowledge of a broad variety of part and assembly types, and various DFM techniques.
  • Conducts prototyping and experiments to evaluate manufacturability and feasibility of new product designs or technology. Analyzes results and provides recommendations for product designs, technology capability, and equipment requirements.
  • Leads the creation of new production lines for a moderate variety of assembly types or with advanced knowledge in a specialized field. Designs and optimizes factory or production line layouts, process flows, and work station layouts. Provides occasional input to budgets.
  • Establishes and optimizes new processes and assembly methods based on sound knowledge of ergonomics, human factors, industry best practices, and equipment capability. Demonstrates capability of specifying, evaluating, recommending, and implementing a broad variety of high complexity equipment, tools, and fixtures.
  • Understands and applies knowledge of time standards and capacity modeling. May create models to forecast production output and resource requirements. May provide product costing information or influence make-buy decisions.
  • Leverages expertise to create procedures, process specifications, and work instructions. Understands the usage and capabilities of IT systems within manufacturing and may specify new requirements.
  • Develops and implements process improvements by applying a variety of techniques (i.e., Six Sigma, LEAN) to improve process capability, cost, and quality.
  • Provides significant input and support in the selection and/or bring-up of suppliers and/or contract manufacturers to produce parts and/or assemblies.

Level Of Responsibility
  • Working independently with little supervision.
  • Making decisions that are moderate in impact; errors may have financial impact or effect on projects, operations, or customer relationships; errors may require involvement beyond immediate work group to correct.
  • Using verbal and written communication skills to convey complex and/or detailed information to multiple individuals/audiences with differing knowledge levels. May require strong negotiation and influence, communication to large groups or high-level constituents.
  • Having a moderate amount of influence over key organizational decisions (e.g., is consulted by senior leadership to provide input on key decisions).
  • Completing tasks that do not have defined steps; simultaneous use of multiple mental abilities is generally required to determine the best approach; mistakes may result in significant rework.
  • Exercising substantial creativity to innovate new processes, procedures, or work products within guidelines or to achieve established objectives.
  • Using deductive and inductive problem solving; multiple approaches may be taken/necessary to solve the problem; often information is missing or conflicting; advanced data analysis and interpretation skills are required.
  • Occasionally participates in strategic planning within own area affecting immediate operations.
