Job Overview

At Georgetown’s Center for Brain Plasticity and Recovery, located in the Department of Neurology, we study brain reorganization after stroke in children and adults, with a particular emphasis on language and visuo-spatial abilities. We combine detailed assessment of these abilities using neuropsychological and other behavioral testing with functional and anatomical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using our research-dedicated 3-Tesla scanner. Our research participants are children and adults who suffered a stroke more than a year prior to study enrollment or their age-matched healthy controls.

The Research Specialist II assists with the day-to-day running of two stroke research studies: the pediatric stroke project led by Elissa Newport, and the adult stroke project led by Anna Greenwald. After initial training by Greenwald and the person who supervises data collection on the pediatric research project, the Research Specialist II works both independently and with other research staff, and assists in training and supervising new lab members and undergraduate students who join the research project.

They also closely collaborate with investigators at sites distant from Georgetown in resolving any associated logistical and administrative problems.

Work Interactions

Directly supervised by a faculty member, the Research Coordinator II in turn assists in the supervision of other full-time and part-time staff members and undergraduate student assistants, working alongside and facilitating the research of faculty members, postdocs, and graduate students, and collaborating with investigators from other research sites in the area (MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital, Childrens National Medical Center, and National Institutes of Health).

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, or a related field – preference for Master’s degree
• 3 to 5 years related experience in a research setting
• Working knowledge of human subjects research, experimental design, and statistical analyses
• Familiarity with Excel and data analysis software
• Comfortable working with children and patient participants, including maintaining rapport and following protocols during neuropsychological assessments that can be lengthy and at times frustrating for the participants.
• Highly organized, reliable, capable of appropriately handling confidential health information
• Ability to work independently after initial training
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to instruct and supervise undergraduate research assistants
• An interest in neuroimaging research – preference for direct experience, but training will be provided post-hire
• Ability to safely work in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) environment – that is, must not have a pacemaker, aneurysm clip, non-removable ferromagnetic object in or on the body, or have any other condition posing a safety risk
  

Preferred Qualifications In Work Experience

• Work experience with children and/or patient populations
• Administering neuropsychological test batteries
• Conducting neuroimaging research
• Using one or more of the following software packages: Matlab, PsychoPy, E-Prime, Presentation, SPM, FSL, and AFNI BrainVoyager
