Job Description - Applications Engineer

Precitech designs and manufactures ultra precision machining solutions for freeform diamond turning, milling, and grinding which are used to produce optical lenses, mold inserts, mirrors, and precision mechanical components. Our diamond turning machines produce rotationally symmetric, asymmetric, freeform, and sculpted geometries with form tolerances in the sub-micron range and nanometer surface finishes.


Position Overview
This Applications Engineer is responsible for providing on-site applications support and problem solving for key customers. He/she is responsible for working closely with Field Sales and Engineering to determine the best and most suitable Precitech machining system or feature to achieve optimal results for the customer. This position will involve making of sample components to prove system capability, customer and employee training, system prove-out, and occasional travel to shows and customer locations to provide technical assistance, training and support.

Specific Duties

  • Work in close contact with Sales and Engineering in support of qualifying potential customer requirements, and recommend by way of proving-out, effective techniques and Precitech systems that will achieve customer satisfaction. Recommendations to include accessories, spare parts and service to customers as part of the application support and problem solving activity.
  • Program and operate Precitech precision machining systems to manufacture sample parts.
  • Serve as a customer host and provide demonstrations in support of the selling effort.
  • Provide on-site educational and field training opportunities for both customers and company employees.
  • Develop instructional outlines and training curriculum to ensure consistency in the process and provide for the opportunity to cover system features and various safe operating techniques to allow for optimal machining results.
  • Occasionally perform machine and accessory installation at customer sites anywhere globally.
  • Identify opportunities for additional system applications at customer sites.
  • Manage time and schedules consistent with sales priorities, account strategies and efficient use of equipment and facilities.
  • Develop long-term consultative, problem-solving relationships with key customers, based on a thorough understanding of their current and future ultra precision machining needs.

  • Essential Skills and Experience


  • A very high degree of hands-on experience with ultra precision machining systems and applications. Knowledge of optics and/or metrology is a plus.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Master’s degree preferred in a technical discipline, with skills in machining or material removal techniques. PhD. is preferred.
  • Additional experience in material science, metrology, and general lab techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret prints and CAD files
  • Experience in various computer software applications and Microsoft applications.
  • Ability to travel 40% of the time globally.
