DescripciónThe Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) is a cutting-edge institute addressing global public health challenges through research, translation into policy and education. The overall goal of the Malaria Physiopathology group ( https://www.isglobal.org/en/our-team/-/profiles/3300 ) is to contribute to the development of new tools for the control and eventual elimination of malaria through the understanding of key physiopathological events of malaria in children and pregnant women. To this end, we combine molecular biology, immunology, epidemiology and clinical medicine to study parasite and host factors influencing the clinical outcome of malaria infections.Genome science has the potential to inform about key drivers of P. falciparum (Pf) transmission and guide actions towards malaria elimination. As parasite population size decrease after optimized interventions, bottlenecks and selection pressure are expected to reduce Pf genetic diversity and fuel the propagation of parasite traits with enhanced fitness to new transmission environments. Here we aim to advance the goal of malaria eradication by integrating malaria epidemiology and genetics for a deeper understanding of parasite transmission and evolution in a near-elimination African setting. This project will involve the collection and analysis of parasite samples in Mozambique in the context of an ongoing project ( https://www.isglobal.org/en/-/genmoz ). During the project, we will build genomic analytical and interpretative capacities for malaria genomics and identify key transmission events using genomic data.
