  • To promote and ensure quality teaching and effective learning of English.
  • To support the wider aims of British Council and its cultural relations mission.
  • To support the Director English in meeting British Council Taiwan strategic objectives.
Role contextWe Are Looking For a Teacher Who
  • has experience in Adult teaching and Adult course and material design
  • invests in learning about our learners and ensuring learners have a sense of progress within every lesson
  • communicates subject knowledge of concepts, skills and language systems effectively and in ways appropriate to the learners and type of course being delivered
  • prepares courses and individual lessons that fully meet course objectives, employ appropriate methodology and meet learners’ needs
  • plans, controls and facilitates interaction in the classroom that is appropriate to the classroom activity and which considers the different needs, abilities, cultures and genders of the learners
  • employs evaluation and assessment tools at various stages in the learning process
  • evaluates learners’ needs suggesting appropriate materials and strategies to help learners achieve their negotiated objectives and become more independent in their learning and to help learners adjust their learning styles and strategies in order to become more effective in their learning
  • is customer focussed and dedicates attention to our customers’ experience whilst studying with us.
  • communicates well with students
AccountabilitiesMain accountabilities but not limited to the following:
  • Support British Council’s global English strategy by maintaining the provision of high-quality Adult teaching in our centres.
  • Delivering teaching to the highest standards of ELT.
  • Enhancing British Council’s reputation as a world authority in ELT.
  • Continuing professional development and sharing of best practice.
Responsibilities
  • To teach up to a maximum of 18 hours a week, depending on operational requirements, ensuring teaching meets quality standards and learner needs and expectations.
  • To maintain good relationships with customers and colleagues.
  • To effectively line manage up to five members of staff.
  • To provide high quality training and support to teachers and other staff.
  • To support effective communication with students ensuring we provide an excellent customer care service.
Main Duties
  • To teach up to 18 hours a week of scheduled Adult classes or cover where necessary (cover may include YL classes).
  • To actively engage in performance management and professional development to ensure quality and high standards in teaching and learning.
  • To provide support and training for all Adult English products.
  • To support and motivate teachers to deliver excellent quality lessons in line with our Adult strategy.
  • To cover for the Senior Teacher Adults in their absence.
  • To help deliver induction for new teachers on the Adult products.
  • To liaise with the academic teams to ensure adequate training is provided on training days for teaching Adults.
  • To contribute to the development of the Adult English course offer and value-added services such as: (1) student consultations; (2) additional products (short courses, workshops, holiday courses); (3) external events (e.g. student demos, social events).
  • To contribute to the development of Adult syllabus documents and teacher resources.
  • To support local marketing and promotional strategies.
  • To assist the teaching centre team in delivering excellent customer service.
  • To work proactively as a member of the academic team.
  • To collaborate with colleagues across the cluster (China – Hong Kong – Taiwan), and regionally as required.
  • To monitor student attendance and assessment input by teachers.
  • To contribute to the development, evaluation and improvement of English language courses in order to meet students’ needs by actively working as member of the academic team.
  • Provide duty management cover.
  • To attend academic team meetings as required.
  • To assist in recruitment and interviews as required.
  • To visit Shipai and SongShan teaching centres when necessary.
  • To visit off-site Corporate clients when necessary.
  • To ensure safeguarding and guidelines are applied and upheld in line with standards and policy for the following areas:
  • Child protection
  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, especially with regard to children with Special Educational Needs
  • Health and Safety
Requirements
  • Cambridge CELTA/Trinity cert TESOL
  • Recognised diploma in EFL i.e. DELTA/Trinity Diploma (completed or in process)
  • High proficiency in English i.e. full mastery of English across all 4 skills equivalent to user CEFR C2
  • First degree or equivalent
Minimum/essentialRole specific knowledge and experience:
  • At least 4 years relevant teaching experience post CELTA
  • Experience in teaching relevant courses:
  • Young Learners
  • Adults
  • Experience in training and developing teachers
Desirable
  • Teacher Training experience e.g. CELTA, Distance DELTA tutoring.
  • Experience in managing teachers’ performance and line management experience.
Role specific skillsAcademic Management
  • Able to manage and develop pedagogic activities such as syllabus design and course planning.
  • Able to develop products to suit customer needs.
  • Proven ability to undertake teacher observations, teacher training, line management and professional development of teachers.
  • Proven ability to manage the efficient deployment of resources to achieve outputs for the Teaching Centre.
