Minimum qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or related field or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3 years of work experience with consumer and handheld product design.
  • Experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools (such as PTC Creo, ProE, or Unigraphics NX).

Preferred qualifications:
  • 5 years of experience with overseas suppliers/manufacturing partners designing/ramping high-volume parts and assemblies.
  • 2 years of experience leading projects in design/development and ramp up product to mass production.
  • Experience in Mechanical Engineering across multiple related areas: plastic injection molding, sheet metal, extrusion, CNC, and die casting.
  • Expertise in developing/integrating electro-mechanical components.
  • Expertise in areas of Tolerance Analysis, Statistical Analysis, Design of Experiments (DoE), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Thermal Design, Design failure mode and effect analysis (DFMEA), Design For Manufacturing (DFM), and mechanical simulation tools.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally 30% of the time.

About The Job

As a member of a fast-paced multi-disciplinary team, you use your creativity and diverse range of engineering experience to explore solutions to a variety of engineering problems. As a mechanical engineer, you participate in the design, analysis, and prototyping of new concepts. You work in a manufacturing and product oriented development environment and collaborate with vendors and outside sources in order to see parts through to manufacture.

As a Senior Product Design Engineer, you will drive the mechanical development of our products. In this technical role, you will oversee the development of Fitbit products to ensure function, mechanical robustness, manufacturability, time to market, and cost goals are met. Additionally, you will lead Original Design Manufacturer (ODM)/Contract Manufacturer (CM)/Joint Design Manufacturer (JDM) resources. You will see the big picture while also paying close attention to details. You will create development plans backed by data, and orchestrate a team to execute said plans. You will drive decision making amidst ambiguity and competing priorities in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment. In this highly visible position, you will interact with all cross-functional teams in the project team. You will have the opportunity to make an impact on the products we develop and have ownership of the mechanical design of an entire product.

Responsibilities

  • Integrate and collaborate with local/overseas engineering and cross-functional teams to deliver high quality products.
  • Own the mechanical product architecture in earlier phases, identify analysis and prototyping needs required to enable predictable and successful system builds. Facilitate the appropriate use of design reviews.
  • Provide technical oversight of the mechanical development by leading a team of mechanical engineers responsible for Identify, delegate, and track tasks. Ensure thorough documentation of studies and design decisions.
  • Contribute to the success and development of individuals on the project team by defining clear expectations, providing timely and specific feedback, and holding others accountable.
  • Contribute to the evolution of the Fitbit design process.
