POSITION SUMMARY

Nature and Scope

Air separation plant (ASU) is a continuous process plant operating throughout the year with short period of plant outage for maintenance activities, onstream status should be at least 98%. Besides atmospheric air, energy, in the form of electrical power or steam, is the other main component required to produce ASU products. There are many different electrical equipment necessary for continuous on-stream operation of the whole plant, from large power medium voltage induction motor, medium voltage air and gas insulated cabinet switchgears, synchronous generator, low voltage variable frequency drives, and many other electrical loads powered from low voltage power control centers and medium voltage switchgear lineup.

One other major facility is hydrogen generation plant, which is electrically classified as a hazardous area while the air separation plant is classified as safe area. Electrical equipment installed throughout the plant, as well as in electrical classified hazardous area, would comply with relevant international standards, and Air Products electrical equipment standards and specification.

The actual electrical power supply configuration may differ from plant to plant, but in general, electrical power is supplied to the plant at medium voltage level, transform down to working level voltages for operation of induction motors and other loads. In some plants, standby diesel generator provides the backup power necessary for continuous operation of pipeline equipment. This configuration is equally applicable in air separation unit and hydrogen generating plants.

MAIN AND PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Ensure efficient and effective implementation of all Air Products electrical safe work practices and standards in keeping with worldwide practices.
  • Provide and execute training and qualification programs of all plant based AP operation and maintenance personnel whose duties involve handling and interrogation of electrical equipment such as medium voltage switchgear, low voltage control center and similar equipment.
  • Provide technical support for the safe and reliable operation of electrical equipment to operation and maintenance teams including analysis of equipment operation, troubleshooting of equipment failure, and driving any changes to achieve more reliable operations.
  • Ensure safe execution of technical changes and modification to electrical equipment and system as needed for continuous on-stream operation of process equipment and systems
  • Provide technical leadership to plant management team through timely provision of information, drawings, manuals and other documentation for safe and competent repair and troubleshooting of failed electrical equipment and systems.
  • Manage, implement, execute projects and initiatives as directed by AOTS Regional Management in conjunction with sub-region Operations Management.
  • JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbent is expected to have tertiary education at a minimum of Bachelor of Electrical Engineering with an emphasis on heavy power technology such as medium voltage switchgear and motor control center, power transformers, induction motors, variable frequency drives, etc. Postgraduate education specialization on certain aspect of electrical engineering will be taken into consideration when it has relevance to the power electrical equipment installed at Air Products facilities.
  • Incumbent is expected to have a minimum of 10 years work experience in an industrial work environment such as chemical manufacturing facility, oil refinery, and steel mill. Special consideration shall be given to incumbent with design and technical specification experience of heavy power electrical equipment and electrically classified hazardous area.
  • Due to the many different electrical equipment present on air separation plant and hydrogen generation sites, technical competencies are required in varying degrees. Starting competencies at time of hiring are defined as follows
    • High proficiency in :

    i. medium voltage switchgear including troubleshooting with schematic drawings, protection relaying functionality, circuit breaker operations

    ii. low voltage motor and equipment control and operation from motor control gears in Motor control center

    iii. knowledge of electrical equipment and its installation in electrically classified hazardous area

    iv. Variable frequency drives – low voltage

    v. Root cause analysis techniques and reporting knowledge

    • Proficient in

    i. Induction motor operations, constructions and repairs

    ii. Electrical network operations and switching philosophies

    iii. Uninterruptible Power Supplies

    iv. Power transformers

    • General knowledge

    i. Synchronous generator operations

    ii. Medium voltage soft-starters and variable frequency drives

    iii. Installations methods of electrical equipment

    4. Independent, self-driven engineer capable of working in a technical supporting role to the maintenance organization, plant management and organization at large.

    5. Able to travel in geographical regions of central and southern regions of Taiwan at short notice, and in exceptional cases, travel to northern region of Taiwan to support local operations.
